How to Choose the Right Baby Clothes Size in Ghana: A Complete Guide for Mothers

Buying baby clothes online in Ghana can feel daunting when you cannot try things on first. Sizes vary by brand, your baby grows fast, and shipping back for a swap takes time you do not have. The good news: with a few simple checks, you can pick the right size on the first try almost every time.

Why size matters more than the label says

Two “6-9 months” rompers from different brands can fit very differently. Carter’s runs slightly larger, while many UK brands run snug. The number on the tag is a guide, not a guarantee. What matters is matching the garment to your baby’s actual measurements – height first, weight second.

The four measurements that matter

  • Height (cm) – the most reliable predictor of clothing fit. Stand baby against a wall, mark the top of the head, measure from floor to mark.
  • Weight (kg) – useful for newborn and 0-12 month sizes when the brand uses weight ranges.
  • Chest circumference – measure under the arms at the fullest part. Important for buttoned shirts and dresses.
  • Waist – the natural waistline. Useful for jeans, trousers and skirts that have an elastic or button waist.

Write these down. They will save you time on every future purchase.

Six tips Ghanaian mums swear by

  1. Always go one size up if your baby is in the upper half of the age range. Babies grow fast and a slightly loose romper today is a perfect fit in three weeks.
  2. Buy seasonally. Harmattan (December-February) calls for warmer layers, even for newborns. Plan ahead – buy 6-9 month winter pieces when baby is 3 months old, not when the cold starts.
  3. Trust your eyes, not the tag. Compare the new piece to a current outfit that fits well. Same shoulder width? Same length from neck to hem? You are good.
  4. Sleepwear should be slightly loose for comfort and safety. Babies regulate temperature less efficiently than adults, and tight sleepwear restricts movement.
  5. Stretch matters. A 6-month romper in stretchy cotton fits longer than the same size in a stiff fabric.
  6. For shoes, allow 1 cm beyond the longest toe. Crawling babies can use slightly larger sizes; walking toddlers need a snug heel.

What to do when you get the size wrong

It happens. At ClickMotherCare we offer 7-day returns on most items in original condition with tags attached. Pieces marked “Final Sale” and underwear are non-returnable for hygiene reasons. Save the packaging until your baby has tried the outfit on – it makes returns simple.
